About Me

I am a below knee amputee. More importantly, I am also Mommy to two boys, a very active 10 year old (Robby) and an mischievous toddler (Timmy). I have learned that being a parent with a disability can create some unusual and sometimes humorous situations. This blogger is available for hire! Dance Party

I am so thankful that the weekend is almost here. I am looking forward to a few days of quiet and rest. Of course, I don't think the kids are going to be keen on quietly resting. I might convince Robby that calm activities would be fun, but Timmy won't buy it. My little guy has been in constant motion.

The past few days Timmy has been hosting several dance parties in our kitchen. A few times a day he cranks up the Alexa, dons his skates and invites me to dance with him. Never one to turn down a dance from a handsome young man, we rock out to The Floor is Lava and Musical Chairs.

He has a great time skating around with me. By the time we are finished, we are both drenched in sweat and red faced. I wouldn't mind once or twice a day, but we lately we have been having upwards of six dance parties a day. The weather has been crummy and I know that it is a great outlet for him. That being said, I don't know where he gets his energy!

I'm hoping that the weather breaks so my little dancer can play outside this weekend. I am looking forward to laying in hammock while he digs and explores in the yard. Fingers crossed the rain stays away and we don't have to wear our dancing shoes quite so often.

Fighting

Yesterday was extraordinarily busy. I felt like I was hopping from the moment I woke up. Unfortunately, we were so busy that we were not able to play outside or make it to the farm to pick up our CSA share. Hopefully things will calm down today and we will be able to relax a tad.

I wouldn't have been so busy if I was just handling work and schoolwork. Instead, I had to square away issues with companies because promises were not kept. I'm so tired of fighting with everybody to meet the bare minimum of their obligations. Always having to advocate is exhausting!

Alas, today is another day and I'm hoping it will be a good one. I'm looking forward to playing outside and decompressing in the fresh air. I think we all need to unplug for awhile.

Productive

It always amazes me how just a short diversion from my schedule can cause me to feel unbalanced for days. I never thought I would be so dependent upon routine. Yet here I am, living the dream.

I spent most of Sunday catching up on work and housework. By the time I went to bed I was exhausted. Unfortunately my fatigue did not translate into a solid sleep. I was restless all night, leaving me feeling even more run down when I woke up yesterday.

Thanks to a pot of coffee I was able to perk up and attack the day. I was surprisingly productive, especially considering how the morning started. The boys are caught up with their schoolwork and I am actually ahead of schedule for my work projects.

Today the weather is going to be beautiful and I'm hoping to escape to the park for a few hours to play. I think we could all use a little fresh air.  After working so hard for the past few days we deserve to enjoy recess.

Farm, Cookies and Bowling

Robby had a fantastic time at his classes on Friday. When I picked him up he was grinning from ear to ear. He was delighted to be reunited with his friends and the "squad" has already begun to scheme and strategize.

While Robby was busy in school Timmy and I discovered a wonderful little farm to explore. I have no idea how this farm park has remained undetected until now! This public farm had animals, a full playground and even a carousel to ride. It was a perfect way to spend a few hours while Robby was in class. I did not realize how much I have missed our little outings until we were in the midst of one.

Saturday morning the boys and I woke up and took our annual cookies to the firehouse. After we left we continued heading north towards Pennsylvania. My sister had a big birthday over the weekend and we wanted to celebrate with her.

Robby and Timmy were both excited that their cousins were permitted to leave their dad's early so they could spend the Saturday night and all day on Sunday with their mom. I took advantage of the reunion and booked a lane for rock 'n bowl.

We had so much fun dancing to the live band, bowling and just being silly. On Sunday we woke up early and headed back home. I spent the majority of the day working and catching up on some projects. A new week begins today, and I am determined that it will be good.

Return to Class

Robby has been looking forward to today for three months. After 12 weeks away from his friends and his favorite role-playing games, today he returns to his enrichment classes. He absolutely loves these classes and I delight seeing him so happy and excited.

One of my favorite parts of the week is picking up Robby after class. He always emerges from the school with a smile as wide as the sky. He spends the drive home telling me all about the class, the battles that ensued during the game and the antics with his friends.

Unfortunately, Timmy is not nearly as excited about Robby returning to his enrichment classes. The school is nearly 40 minutes away, which turns into over 2.5 hours in the car. I wish I could find something fun to do with him local to the school, but everything is closed right now. Even if I could find activities I would be hesitant to take him. Covid is still flaring and it simply isn't safe for my little guy.

So, Timmy will be my co-pilot (from the back seat) as I chauffeur Robby tomorrow. I know that he will become bored, but hopefully a trip (or two) through a drive-thru for fries will help ease his woes. This will be our Friday routine for the next 9 months, so we have to figure out a way to make it work.

Sick? Maybe

Although he wasn't running a fever, yesterday Timmy was not himself. He woke up at his normal time only to fall fast asleep five minutes later. He slept soundly until nearly 10, which is almost unprecedented for him. When I found him sleeping on my bed, I suspected that he wasn't going to be his normal self.

My prediction was correct. He was quick to cry and fuss. It was almost as if he was overwhelmed by everything around him. He broke down doing his schoolwork and ended up sobbing on the couch for nearly 30 minutes. He worked himself into such a tizzy that neither Robby or I could calm him.

Eventually he calmed himself down and complained of a headache. I am not sure if the headache was due to the crying or something underlying, but I called an early end to the school day.

I spent the rest of the day trying to keep him quiet and content. He didn't breakdown again, but he was not his normal self. He didn't smile and seemed uncomfortable throughout the afternoon. I'm hoping that he wakes up feeling better today. I miss my little mischief maker!

Ouch

The first day back to normal after a long weekend is always stressful. At least, that was my mantra yesterday. I felt like I was chasing my tail from the moment I woke up until I finally fell into bed at night. Even though I tried to get everything ready for the week, I was discombobulated and unorganized all day.

To add insult to injury, my leg was sore much of the day. I didn't have an injury, at least not that I know of, but my limb just did not want to stay comfortable. I wasn't in pain, but I was reminded of my prosthesis with every step. Bad leg days almost always trickle over and impact the rest of my mood. Yesterday was no exception.

Robby and Timmy were content to work through their assignments and then to spend the rest of the day quietly playing. I woke up wanting to go outside because I knew the weather was going to gorgeous. When the opportunity actually presented itself, I was lacking both the time and the motivation to play.

Sigh. I hope that today is a better day.
