About Me

My photo
I am a below knee amputee. More importantly, I am also Mommy to two boys, a very active 10 year old (Robby) and an mischievous toddler (Timmy). I have learned that being a parent with a disability can create some unusual and sometimes humorous situations. This blogger is available for hire! Let's talk and learn how a blog can expand your business.

Baking

I am so thankful that my phantom pain faded through the night and stayed away. Usually my bouts of phantom pain only last for a day, but I'm always nervous that it is going to be along haul situation. Some of my friends suffer terribly with phantom pain and I honestly don't know how they deal with it so gracefully. Even though I experience episodes every few months I am very fortunate!

The absence of pain made me feel both elated and nervous. It was wonderful to not hurt anymore, but I was anxious that the smallest moment would make it return. Experience tells me that it will take a few days before my nerves normalize and I feel completely comfortable again.

The temperatures were cool yesterday, so we spent the day inside. Timmy and I worked in the kitchen prepping a huge tray of fruit salad and s'mores cookies. I love baking with my kids! Even when I'm tired or have other things vying for my attention, I try to take full advantage of every opportunity to spend time in the kitchen with my boys.

The temperatures are supposed to rise over the weekend, so we will probably spend a lot of time in the pool. I'm looking forward to a few days in the sunshine, playing and just relaxing. The first week back from vacation has been exhausting, and I need a break.

Phantom Pain (again)

I'm not sure of the cause, but yesterday my phantom pain was constant. I wasn't in enough pain to curl into the fetal position and cry, but I was uncomfortable throughout the day. The pain vacillated between sharp shocking jolts and dull twisting throbbing. I tried every trick in my book, but nothing made it go away.

I hate bad leg days! My entire mood is impacted when my limb hurts. Phantom pain is an unwelcome reminder of my vulnerability. Prosthetic issues, weather or a myriad of other situations can quickly render me both in pain and immobile .

As much as I tried to remain upbeat and happy, I know that my sour mood was on full display. By the middle of the afternoon I stopped feigning contentment. I surrendered to my "bad mood" and tried to stay alone as much as possible. Sometimes being alone is the only real solution.

Late in the evening the pain started to wane. Thankfully I slept through the night and my limb is feeling better today. Hopefully I won't have another flare up for awhile.

Boring

Yesterday was laid back and relatively boring. Going to the farm was definitely the highlight of our activities. Unfortunately the weather was humid and uncomfortable, so nobody really felt like playing. We ended up just picking up our CSA and heading back home. Pretty boring, huh?

We didn't do anything exciting, but I did manage to get a lot of work done. After the veggies were cleaned and stowed I was able to knock out several solid hours of work. I'm used to working in the early morning and the late evening. Being able to focus in the afternoon is a rare luxury.

Hopefully today will be more adventurous than yesterday. A quiet day every once in awhile is fine, but the boys (especially Timmy) become antsy when they can't get out some energy. Antsy kids often lead to chaos and destruction, both of which I would like to avoid.

Water Bug

Timmy and I had another fun filled day splishing and splashing in our little driveway oasis. Even though Scott was initially against the pool, I think he is finally coming around to admitting that it was a good idea. I'm going to hop on the opportunity by laying the groundwork for a bigger pool next year! Hopefully (fingers crossed) I can convince him to put it in the backyard instead of the driveway.

Today the heat is supposed to break, but I don't think that will discourage my little water bug. While I love playing with him in the pool, I'm hoping I will be able to convince him to accompany me to the farm. We have to pick up our CSA and we haven't been able to play there in awhile. With the temperatures a little cooler, it might be the perfect adventure for the day.

Here's to another great summer day!

Hot Hot Hot

After a fun-filled vacation, a quiet weekend was exactly what we all needed to unwind and to recenter. The boys seemed content to stay home so I took the opportunity to knock out a lot of work and household chores. I'm proud that the mountain of vacation laundry has been knocked down to a small hill and my to-do list is no longer three pages long.

Even though we didn't go anywhere, we still managed to fit some fun into our quiet time. Timmy and I spent a few hours each day playing and splashing in our pool. While we were out in the pool, Robby and Scott seemed content to play on their computers and to watch television.

It has been obscenely hot for the past few days. Our air conditioner has been running nonstop and has barely been making a dent. I have to say, the cool water has been a fantastic oasis from the sweltering heat. I don't know how Scott and Robby remained comfortable in the heat on their respective electronic devices.

Until the weather breaks, I'll be taking full advantage of our pool!
