About Me

My photo
I am a below knee amputee. More importantly, I am also Mommy to two boys, a very active 10 year old (Robby) and an mischievous toddler (Timmy). I have learned that being a parent with a disability can create some unusual and sometimes humorous situations. This blogger is available for hire! Let's talk and learn how a blog can expand your business.

Bump

Our beautiful weekend weather is gone, pushed out by heavy rain and strong winds. Of course, I didn't need a meteorologist to tell me that the weather shift was approaching. My leg was ouchy most of yesterday, a tell-tale sign of a weather event. I suppose a benefit of living with an amputation is the ability to accurately forecast approaching storms.

I spent the majority of the day adjusting my prosthesis, trying to find a comfortable fit. I knew that the issue wasn't the socket, but I couldn't help myself from constantly trying to make it better. With the weather clearing today, I'm hoping that my limb returns to normal.

Unfortunately, the constant donning and doffing of my prosthesis caused some skin irritation behind my knee. It is a small bump right now, but I know all too well that it could quickly snowball into something more severe. I iced my leg last night which brought down the inflammation.

Fingers crossed that I caught the issue in time!

Pumpkin Farm

This past weekend went by too quickly. It feels like I was just celebrating Friday afternoon, and now we are at Monday again. Even though the weekend flew by, we had a lot of fun and spent our time well.

Saturday Timmy and I spent the majority of our day outside, exploring, playing and swinging. Well, he was swinging. I was appointed the official swing pusher. By the time we came inside Saturday evening my arms were so sore I had trouble grasping a cup.

Yesterday we began our day by visiting our favorite pumpkin farm. The boys had a great time scouring the fields in search of the perfect pumpkin. After carefully weighing all of the options, the pumpkins were chosen and loaded into the wagon. Timmy chose a pumpkin that was nearly as big as him while Robby leaned more towards symmetry than size. I continue to be amazed by the differences between my boys.

After we came home from the pumpkin farm we dismantled the pool. I was sad to see it taken down, but I'm also glad to have our driveway reclaimed. We carefully stowed all of the pieces so (hopefully) assembly will be easy next year. (We decided to trash the liner and purchase a new one next year. I read that the liner can become brittle after it is used and dried out.)

Timmy and I spent a few more hours on Sunday playing on the trampoline and swinging. We definitely took full advantage of the gorgeous weather. Here's to a great week!

Finally Friday

 Happy Friday!

Our Friday schedule is always busy, but the smile on Robby's face makes it worth the effort. He loves going to his enrichment classes. While Robby is in class, Timmy and I have been spending the time exploring the area and having mini-adventures. It is definitely harder to find activities as the weather is changing and people are starting to congregate indoors, but thankfully my little Hamlet isn't picky.

This weekend will be spent putting away our summer items and prepping for winter. Our pool frame is still intact in the middle of our driveway. We are going to (try to) take it apart and stow it for next year. We've watched several YouTube videos so hopefully it is as easy as it appears. Of course, Scott and I don't have a great track record with construction oriented ventures.

I'm hoping to spend a lot of time outside this weekend. I just love the cooler weather. Have a great weekend!

Annoyed

 Is it Friday yet?

This has been one of those weeks where I find myself looking at the calendar, hoping the weekend quickly arrives. I haven't been busier than normal, but every task is more laborious when I am tired and hurting. Thankfully the phantom pain was mild last night, allowing me to sleep longer. I'm hopeful that the improved sleep will translate into a better day.

I'm tired of hurting. I wish that the insurance adjuster would process my claim quickly so that I could receive my new leg. I hate that my comfort is in her idle hands!

Red Tape

I am anxiously waiting to hear about when we can begin the process for my new leg. I am feeling increasingly uncomfortable through the day, which is making for miserable nights. I've learned that whenever my leg hurts during my daily activities, there is a strong chance I'll be feeling nerve issues at night. Yesterday was no exception.

I finally received an appropriate prescription, so I am just waiting for final approval from the insurance carrier. Sounds easy enough, yet I know that this stage can last for a frustratingly long time. It is infuriating to know that my future comfort is in the hands of somebody who doesn't know me, somebody who is compensated by the employer for casting denials and saving money.

I've been told to remain patient, but after sleepless nights and painful days, it is a difficult task. I'm tired of feeling uncomfortable when I know what comfort is possible. I have said it before, but it is worth repeating. I am more disabled by the insurance red tape than I am by the loss of my limb.

Discoveries

My work through the morning and evening so we can play in the afternoon plan worked perfectly. The weather was gorgeous. The bright blue skies and crisp air just made me feel happy and energized. I love autumn!

Timmy and I spent a few hours strolling through our yard with the metal detector. He dug up several screws, can tops and a few unidentified pieces of metal. Although he didn't find the treasure he was seeking, he was delighted with his discoveries. I have to admit, his enthusiasm is contagious.

Today will (hopefully) be a repeat of yesterday. I am sure we will spend a lot of time outside, seeking adventure and enjoying the sunshine. Have a great day!

Fall is here

Another weekend has come and gone. I wish I could detail wonderful adventures. In reality, the weekend was laid back and completely uneventful. Don't get me wrong, uneventful is not a bad thing. After an extremely busy week, it was nice to just relax for a few days.

The weather was miserable on Saturday. Rain and cold air blew into our area, bringing down more nuts and leaves. Sunday we had our first taste of seasonable weather. (I was starting to worry that we were going to bypass autumn this year.) I was so happy to put on jeans and a sweatshirt again!

Inspired by the change in seasons, I spent most of Sunday purging closets of outgrown and worn out clothing. I am always amazed at how much stuff we can fit into our closets and dressers. I always feel emotional when sorting through the outgrown kids clothes, but it is nice to feel organized again.

This week the weather is supposed to be crisp and beautiful. I'm up early again, hoping to get a lot of work done before the kids wake up. After school is done, I want to play outside for a few hours. If the winds stay calm, we may even light the fire pit.

Have I mentioned how much I love Fall?
